Making Positive Steps Count
Real Support for Mums Returning to Work
At Moco Coaching, we’re deeply moved by the Positive Steps campaign launched by BACP and their partners. Painting the real, raw voices of new mums across the paths of Wimbledon Park is more than symbolic - it’s a public acknowledgment of what so many mothers are silently carrying: overwhelm, self-doubt and the relentless pressure to “do it right.”
Because the truth is, being a new mum isn’t a walk in the park. It’s more like a hike through unfamiliar terrain - with no map, little sleep and a soundtrack of unsolicited advice.
And we’re here for every mother walking that path.
Advice Fatigue Is Real
According to the campaign’s research, nearly 70% of new mums say the constant advice they receive doesn’t help - it adds to the pressure. That number doesn’t surprise us. At Moco Coaching, we work with mothers navigating their return to work and identity after childbirth, and we see this daily: the flood of contradictory opinions, the guilt that creeps in with every scroll or side comment, the feeling of never quite measuring up.
We believe that what new mums need isn’t more noise.
They need space.
To breathe.
To reflect.
To ask: Who am I now? And what do I need?
When Support is Self-Care, Not Self-Indulgence
It’s heartbreaking - but not surprising - that 31% of new parents worry that therapy or counselling is “self-indulgent” unless they have a “serious problem.” We hear similar fears when women return to work after maternity leave. They feel the pressure to be “grateful,” to “bounce back,” to prove they haven’t missed a beat.
But what if taking care of your mental and emotional wellbeing isn’t indulgent at all - but the foundation for everything else?
Whether it’s therapy, coaching, peer support or just a protected moment of stillness - it’s not selfish to seek support. It’s smart. And it’s strong.
Motherhood Meets Identity Shift
At Moco, we work with women as they re-enter the workplace - but the conversations we have are rarely just about logistics. They’re about confidence. About grief. About not recognising yourself anymore. About the messy, powerful evolution of becoming not just a parent, but a new version of you.
That’s why we champion campaigns like Positive Steps. Because they strip away the false narrative that everything should feel “natural” and effortless after birth - and instead offer what’s really needed: empathy, visibility and support.
A Path Forward
To every new mum walking through the fog of uncertainty, we echo what BACP’s Georgina Sturmer so powerfully said:
You are not alone. You deserve to be heard. And your challenges are not too small to matter.
Let’s normalise asking for help - not just in crisis, but in the quiet, hard moments in between.
And let’s make sure every mother knows:
💬 Your mental wellbeing matters.
💥 You are not broken - you are becoming.
🤝 Support is strength.
