Mastering Your Inner Voice

How to Recognise It, Understand It and Change It

What do you say about yourself behind closed doors, in the safety of your own mind?

Often, it’s things we’d never say out loud.
“I’m not enough.”
“I always get this wrong.”
“I don’t deserve more than this.”

These quiet, repetitive thoughts make up our inner voice - and many of them are rooted in what we call limiting beliefs.

Limiting beliefs are not flaws. They are learned. Formed through experience, upbringing, culture, moments of hurt or failure. And if left to run unchecked, they can subtly block progress in love, money, confidence, relationships and career - without us ever realising they’re in charge.

Why Your Inner Voice Matters More Than You Think

Your inner dialogue is not just background noise - it influences how you show up, what you go for, what you tolerate and what you avoid.

When your inner voice is harsh or fearful:

  • You play smaller than you’re capable of

  • You self-sabotage opportunities

  • You second-guess decisions

  • You settle, rather than stretch

When it’s supportive and regulated, something shifts. You move with more clarity, courage and self-trust.

A Simple (Not Simplistic) Way to Start Working With It

It’s important to say this clearly:
This is a simple way of looking at inner voice work, not an easy one.

Limiting beliefs can be deeply ingrained - part of your very make-up. For many people, they’ve been running the show for decades. Acknowledging them can be uncomfortable. Shifting them takes time, consistency and compassion.

But when these inner voices are no longer serving you, it becomes essential to work with them - gently, not forcefully.

Here’s a starting framework:

1. Notice Without Judgement

Begin by observing your inner voice. What does it say when things feel hard? When you fail? When you succeed? Awareness always comes first.

2. Name the Belief

Put words to it:
“I’m not capable.”
“I don’t deserve more.”
“I’ll be found out.”

Naming it creates distance - this is something you have, not something you are.

3. Question the Story

Ask yourself:

  • Is this objectively true?

  • Where did this belief come from?

  • Is it helping or protecting me - or holding me back?

4. Introduce a New, Kinder Narrative

Not forced positivity - just truth with compassion:

  • “I am learning.”

  • “I am allowed to take up space.”

  • “I can grow beyond this.”

5. Practice (Again and Again)

These voices didn’t form overnight - and they won’t disappear overnight either. Change happens through repetition, reflection, and regulation.

Why Starting Sooner Matters

The sooner you begin noticing and working with your inner voice, the sooner you create space for:

  • Healthier relationships

  • Stronger boundaries

  • More confidence around money and worth

  • Decisions that align with who you’re becoming

Small shifts in self-talk create big ripple effects over time.

Final Thought

Your inner voice is powerful.
It can quietly limit you - or deeply support you.

Working with it is not a quick fix. It’s a practice.
And every time you choose awareness over autopilot, kindness over criticism, you move closer to a life that feels more aligned, spacious and true.

If your inner voice is asking for something different - MOCO Coaching is here to support you.
