Could It Be Your Thyroid?

Understanding the Small Gland That Has a Big Impact

Have you ever felt exhausted despite sleeping?

Struggled to lose weight despite exercising?

Found yourself feeling unusually anxious, forgetful or emotional?

Perhaps you've blamed stress.

A busy lifestyle.

Getting older.

Parenthood.

Work.

Life.

And whilst all of those things can absolutely play a role, there may be another explanation worth considering.

Your thyroid.

Despite being a relatively small gland, the thyroid has a surprisingly big impact on how we feel day to day. Yet many people don't fully understand what it does, why it matters or how to recognise when something isn't quite right.

What Is the Thyroid?

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of your neck.

Its job is to produce hormones that help regulate many of the body's essential functions.

Think of it as your body's thermostat and energy manager.

The hormones produced by the thyroid help control:

  • Metabolism

  • Energy levels

  • Heart rate

  • Body temperature

  • Mood

  • Digestion

  • Muscle function

  • Concentration and memory

  • Sleep patterns

In simple terms, your thyroid helps determine how efficiently your body uses energy.

When it's working well, you probably don't think about it.

When it isn't, you can feel the effects throughout your entire body.

What Happens When the Thyroid Isn't Working Properly?

There are two common thyroid conditions.

An Underactive Thyroid (Hypothyroidism)

This happens when the thyroid doesn't produce enough hormones.

As a result, many of the body's processes begin to slow down.

Common symptoms can include:

  • Fatigue

  • Weight gain

  • Brain fog

  • Low mood

  • Feeling cold

  • Dry skin

  • Hair thinning

  • Muscle aches

  • Constipation

  • Heavy or irregular periods

For many people, the symptoms develop gradually, making them easy to dismiss or attribute to everyday life.

An Overactive Thyroid (Hyperthyroidism)

This occurs when the thyroid produces too much hormone, causing the body's systems to speed up.

Symptoms may include:

  • Anxiety

  • Feeling restless

  • Increased heart rate

  • Weight loss

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Feeling hot

  • Excessive sweating

  • Shaking or tremors

Again, many of these symptoms can easily be mistaken for stress or burnout.

Why Women Often Miss the Signs

Thyroid conditions are significantly more common in women than men.

In fact, women are estimated to be up to ten times more likely to experience thyroid problems.

What's particularly challenging is that many thyroid symptoms overlap with other life transitions women commonly experience, including:

  • Parenthood

  • Perimenopause and menopause

  • Stress and burnout

  • Caring responsibilities

  • Hormonal changes

It's not uncommon for women to spend months wondering why they feel exhausted, overwhelmed or unlike themselves before discovering their thyroid may be contributing.

The Impact Goes Beyond Physical Symptoms

At MOCO, we often talk about life transitions and wellbeing.

One reason thyroid conditions can be so challenging is that they don't just affect physical health.

They can affect confidence.

Relationships.

Work performance.

Motivation.

Identity.

When you're constantly tired or struggling to concentrate, it can begin to impact every area of life.

Many people describe feeling frustrated because they know something doesn't feel right but can't quite explain why.

Understanding the role of the thyroid can often be the first step towards finding answers.

How Do You Get Your Thyroid Checked?

The good news is that checking your thyroid is relatively simple.

If you're experiencing symptoms that concern you, speak to your GP.

A thyroid function blood test can measure levels of thyroid hormones and determine whether your thyroid may be underactive or overactive.

The test is quick and commonly available through primary care.

Your GP will usually consider your symptoms alongside your blood test results to decide whether any further investigation or treatment is needed.

If you've been feeling persistently tired, experiencing unexplained symptoms or simply feel that something isn't quite right, it's always worth having a conversation.

You know your body better than anyone.

A Final Thought

It's easy to dismiss symptoms when life is busy.

Many of us become experts at carrying on.

Pushing through.

Telling ourselves we'll deal with it later.

But sometimes our bodies are trying to tell us something.

Not every symptom is caused by a thyroid condition.

But understanding the role your thyroid plays can help you ask the right questions and seek the support you need.

The MOCO Perspective

At MOCO Coaching, we know that wellbeing isn't just about mindset.

It's about recognising that our physical and emotional health are closely connected.

When something doesn't feel right, whether that's stress, burnout, menopause, illness or a thyroid condition, seeking support isn't a sign of weakness.

It's a sign of self-awareness.

Because you deserve to feel your best.

And sometimes understanding what's happening inside your body is the first step towards getting there.
