AI Can Write Your Email…
But It Still Can't Replace Human Connection
"Can you just tell me I'm doing the right thing?"
It's a question more and more of us are asking.
Sometimes we ask a friend.
Sometimes a colleague.
And increasingly...
We ask AI.
Let's be honest.
AI is brilliant.
It can write your emails.
Summarise meetings.
Brainstorm ideas.
Draft presentations.
Plan your week.
As someone who runs a business, I use it almost every day.
And I genuinely think it's one of the most exciting innovations we've seen in years.
But recently I've found myself asking a different question...
If AI is giving us back time... what are we doing with it?
AI Is Here... And That's Not a Bad Thing
The reality is...
AI isn't coming.
It's already here.
In fact, 61% of UK organisations now allow employees to use generative AI at work, whether that's drafting emails, summarising meetings or helping people think through ideas.
I think that's exciting.
Imagine saving an hour writing reports.
Creating presentations in half the time.
Getting rid of repetitive admin.
Having more space to focus on the work that really matters.
Surely that's the dream?
The irony is...
If AI is saving us time...
It should be giving us more opportunities to be human.
More time to coach.
More time to mentor.
More time to check in on colleagues.
More time to build relationships.
The question is...
Are we actually using that time wisely?
AI Is Designed To Help
One of the reasons AI feels so reassuring is because it's designed to help.
It can organise your thoughts.
Offer different perspectives.
Help you think through a problem.
Sometimes, simply writing everything down can make us feel lighter.
And that's a wonderful thing.
But there's a difference between feeling heard...
...and feeling understood.
AI can't sit opposite you and notice your shoulders drop when you mention your manager.
It can't hear the hesitation in your voice when you say,
"I'm fine."
It can't recognise that you've answered every question...
...except the one that really matters.
It can't feel the silence.
And sometimes...
The silence tells us everything.
Here's The Statistic That Made Me Stop And Think...
A recent UK survey found that 63% of people would trust AI to help inform important workplace decisions.
But only 1% would trust AI to make those decisions on its own.
Why?
Because instinctively, we know the difference between information......and judgement.
Between advice......and wisdom.
Between an answer......and genuine connection.
We still want another human involved.
And I don't think that's going to change.
Coaching Isn't About Having The Right Answer
One thing coaching has taught me is this...
People rarely come to me because they need advice.
They come because they need space.
Space to think.
Space to breathe.
Space to untangle what's going on in their head.
Sometimes someone books a coaching session because they want help with confidence.
Half an hour later...
We're talking about grief.
Burnout.
Parenthood.
Relationships.
Returning to work.
Or simply the pressure of trying to hold everything together.
Those conversations don't happen because someone asked the perfect question.
They happen because someone felt safe enough to tell the truth.
Leadership Is Becoming More Human, Not Less
There's a lot of conversation about AI replacing jobs.
I actually think it's doing something else.
It's reminding us what makes us irreplaceable.
Listening.
Empathy.
Curiosity.
Compassion.
Emotional intelligence.
Trust.
These aren't "soft skills."
They're the skills that will define great leaders over the next decade.
Because nobody remembers the manager who wrote the perfect email.
They remember the manager who noticed they weren't themselves.
The one who asked...
"You seem quieter than usual. Are you OK?"
...and then waited long enough to hear the real answer.
AI Shouldn't Replace Our Conversations...
It should improve them.
Let AI draft the report.
Write the first version of the email.
Summarise your meeting notes.
Take away the repetitive tasks.
But don't let efficiency replace humanity.
Use the hour you've saved to have a proper one-to-one.
Check in on someone returning from maternity leave.
Support a colleague caring for elderly parents.
Have lunch with your team.
Celebrate a success.
Notice when someone seems a little quieter than usual.
Because that's the work AI can never do.
The Future Of Work Isn't AI Or People.
It's AI and people.
Technology will continue to evolve.
And that's exciting.
But the more technology advances...
The more valuable our human skills become.
Our ability to listen.
To notice.
To encourage.
To coach.
To connect.
At MOCO Coaching, we believe the workplaces that thrive won't be the ones using the most AI.
They'll be the ones using AI to create more time for the conversations that matter most.
Because AI might help you write a better email.
But only another person can make you feel truly seen.
And perhaps that's the one thing we'll never want technology to replace.
